Time. It's in our control.

Steve Jobs said, “The most precious resource we all have is time.” I would say health comes first and second. Let's talk about time. Time is equal. We all have the same 24 hours to achieve our goals and live our best life.

There's a fair bit of discussion in the media around compressed work weeks and having more time for a healthy lifestyle. Also, a common question I get asked is "How many hours do I work per day?" Time is indeed at the forefront of people's minds.

It got me thinking about how do we manage the equal amount of time we are given. Baring the obvious, what do we do with it?

How often have we caught ourselves or others uttering these common refrains:

"There are never enough hours in the day."

"Where does the time go?"

"I wish I had more time for..."

The reality is time is within our control. If you feel you never have enough, then do a personal audit. What are your essentials? What are your aspirations? What can you remove or adjust to have more space for what genuinely matters? 

Changes that have worked for me

  • Number One is getting clear on what's important.

  • Limiting social media - never at my desk.

  • Joining the 5 AM club. 

  • Set a timer to get specific work tasks completed.

  • Schedule time for relaxation (meditation, exercise, doing nothing).

  • Joined a company that aligned with my goals.

Now, returning to the original question, I don’t work the long hours I used to. But importantly, work time blends perfectly with my 24-hour day. That is a choice I make and control.

I make my work time productive, which means revenue-producing activities, not drinking cups of tea and researching my next holiday destination (although that is important too!). Fewer hours can equal more output. That's a choice.

Time is precious. If nothing changes, nothing changes. Make the commitment. Do more with less.

Make the seconds, minutes, hours and days count and bring the balance you want each day to reality.
